In your particular case, the word longer is being used as an adverb, because it is used to modify the verb stay. That is, it describes the extent of the stay. But it can be used as either an adjective or an adverb.

Here's an example of the word being used as an adjective, where it describes a physical attribute of an object (i.e. its length):

"The longer bridge surprisingly withstood the hurricane force winds better than all of the shorter bridges in the area."

Here's an example of the word being used as an adverb. Here it is being used to express the extent or degree of an action.

"The longer we rowed, the farther we seemed to drift from the opposite shore."

Get yourself a good dictionary. They will often not only give the definition, or definitions of a word, but also show how it is used as different parts of speech. That, in combination with a good grammar book, should put you in good shape.
