We have come a long way since the days of slavery and segregation. But is racism still a major issue in this land?

I have found that with each successive generation, racism becomes less and less of an issue. I see lots of interracial marriages today. When I was a kid, I never saw that. I was not really close to any of the black kids in my class as a kid. But my father had none in his school and my son's best friend in school was black. So we are still evolving.
Many groups of teenagers one sees will be well integrated. That is all the result of the evolution of personal beliefs generations have.
To answer your question directly, I do not think it is a major issue mostly because I remember a time when it was. Most younger people today are far less tolerant of racism and to them even a little bit is a major issue. I think that is good. We are moving in the right direction.
America has done just about everything it can about institutional racism. But only time will eventually change men's hearts. We are well on the way, though.

I agree that race should not be an issue. However, you seem to be only giving intangible, theoretical "examples" to be angry at. Are there knuckleheads that throw racist comments at Obama? Yes, but this accusation has also been used more often than not to dismiss or discredit legitimate criticism of Obama's policies too. Give an example of the racism you have seen on Fox News. Even your assertion implies you are reaching for straws on this. Glenn Beck had a show last year filled with black Conservatives in the audience. Beck asked who here has been called Uncle Toms, sell-outs, Porch ***** or other dismissive name because they don't support liberal policies. They all raised their hands. The show discussed their problem with being Conservative when they are expected to tow the Liberal line. Where does racism really lie here? "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." Does this sound familiar? It's an excerpt from Martin Luther King Jr's "I have a dream speech" It's uttered by various conservatives like Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity on their shows and to resounding applause at Tea Parties. This line is invoked when conservatives see blacks treated as though they can't achieve, are pitied, given government handouts and special treatment. Some of these help to keep them in their situation. It doesn't matter whether you believe that or not, the point is conservatives believe THEY provide real message of equal opportunity by treating black America as equals. When compassion is needed, by giving them a hand-up, not a handout.

Racism is a bad form of persecution, but persecution exists on all levels and almost everyone is guilty. Racism forms a very small part of the injustices that are occurring in our society. Look at senior abuse, ostracism in high schools, reverse racism, etcetera. Much persecution on the personal level is much worse and perpetrated by all races.

Racism the 'hatred' of people of different colors, will exist as long as 'hatred' exists.
In fact racism, the term is a hate filled term, because it ignores whites who hate whites, and blacks who hate blacks.
This is a classic half-truth, a tool of the devil to divide people.
We should rather than stop racism, promote respect, we are all children of God....except hockey players ?

I agree that we have come a long way as a country in regards to racism, but it still very much exists. There are still some people that are very racist and it is very sad.
