FDR did many great things to help the country during the Great Depression. He started the WPA (works progress administration), TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority)--gave electricity to rural areas in the Tennessee Valley, CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps)--similar to AmeriCorps, FDIC--this helped to take away the fear of using banks after the stock market crash of 1929...the list goes on. FDR was the right man for the job when it came to helping us get through the Depression. But, believe it or not, FDR cannot be fully credited for getting us out of the Great Depression, Hitler actually pulled the country out of Depression. If Hitler had not declared war on our allies we would not have been making and sending war goods overseas to help with the war effort. The DoD factories gave people jobs, and ultimately brought the country out of depression.

He gave the country hope and tried to keep folks busy. Mostly he repackaged Hoover's plans and waited things out. Hoover discovered, too late, that his hands off policy would not work. See William Edward Leuchtenberg's The FDR Years: On Roosevelt and his Legacy (Columbia University Press, 1995), p. 33, "Certainly, secular trends toward the concentration of power in Washington, and more particularly the White House, were in motion well before 1933."

He started the TVA which put a lot of men to work building roads and dams. He started other programs for young people where they could go to a camp and learn a trade.
