I've got a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer. The power seems to surge under a load (pulling a steep hill at highway speeds). I just recently replaced the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, cleaned the EGR valve, had the transmission rebuilt (30,000 miles ago), and I can't figure it out. It seems to only do it in Overdrive. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Yeah, I've actually got a code reader that tells me when the torque converter is locked and when its not. I noticed that it seems to go away when its unlocked. I can drop it down a gear and it will stop as well. I know the torque converter was replaced because I did it. I had the transmission rebuilt but I removed it and installed it myself. I'm a pretty expeienced DIY mechanic, so I know I did that right anyway. Thanks for the advice. I kinda suspected that, but I wanted to get a second opinion. Thanks

Torque converter clutch could be trying to stay engaged. This can be tricky but in that scenario, push on the brake pedal just enough to disengage the cruise (as if you had it engaged) and see if the surging stops. If it does then it is the clutch inside the torque converter not disengaging. That doesn't necessarily mean the TC is bad as a valve in the transmission controlling that could be defective. That should be checked first. Also, check to see if the converter was replaced when the trans was rebuilt . Chances are big that it wasn't and if not then the problem may have never been addressed initially.

Hope this helps and good luck.

The locking torque converter is vacuum operated and there is a valve on the firewall on many models. Try dropping it into 3rd gear and see if it goes away. The vacuum level will change with the lower gear and load.

Once you have it narrowed down then you can fix the problem.

umm. Put your transmission is a lower gear. Like 1, 2, or 3. Its a lower gear. Maybe this will work or maybe your Blazer doesn't have a tow package. Just try the lower gear thing and if it doesn't work I would ask a local professional.
