Beyond encouraging them by requiring civility and mutual respect in the classroom, I also base a decent portion of students' grades on participation. I tell them that every time they talk in class about the topic at hand, and/or any time they ask a question about it in class, they get participation points. I mark my roster with their participation in front of them, as they are talking. This encourages most if not all of the students in the class to participate. Of course it also means they learn and retain a lot more since they are actively learning this way.

I was afraid to ask questions for two reasons:
1) I was scared that my question was stupid, and
2) I was scared that I wouldn't understand the second explanation, which would make me look stupid. Luckily, another classmate usually had the same question and asked it, so I was spared.
I would call it normal behaviour as an instructor, many children suffer from social anxiety in a classroom setting. No one wants to be singled out.

the two they are shy and don't experience delicate conversing up, or they actually don't be attentive to whats happening in any respect, and that that they had have too many inquiries to ask and it would appear as if they do no longer pay interest. i will relate in my view, as i became in no way the guy to enhance my hand at college, and that i might additionally concern asking a question that became already defined earlier.

student hesitates 'coz they dont know what is the rection of teacher & if the question is wrong their classmates will laugh.
in order to solve this the teacher must react the student in good way like her/his MOM and teacher should strictly punish the students who laughs in class.
i am 9 class student & my teacher do like above so in our class no one hesitate to ask question.
whoever u are u are so kind person.

Explain that college requires it and high school permits it. Classroom is a safe atmosphere. No one laughs at any answer; all answers are accepted. Some may need fine tuning, but all are welcome. Comfort level should start to increase after that. Sounds as if you are trying. Bravo!!

I am a math instructor. I always try to ease the ambiance for asking questions so that student can easily ask me questions. I just enjoy it.
