Think of the equal sign as being a mirror...whatever you do on one side, you do on the other. So, your first step....you want to eventually get the -w- alone. Since the -27 is a negative number, you need to add 27 to both sides of your equation. Now you'll have 20w=73+27. Step 2: Add 73+27. Now you'll have 20w=100. You still need to get rid of the 20. Since 20w means "20 times w" then you need to do the opposite of multiplying...which is divide. Step 3: Divide both sides of your equation by 20. Now you have w=5.

Since it is an algebraic equation and you would be solving for "w," move the -27 to the other side by addition. This results in "20w=100." Divide the equation by 5 to get w.

-27+20w=73
-27+27+20w=73+27
20w=100
w=5
Check:
-27+20(5)=73
-27+100=73
73=73
