Before you go around bad-mouthing others, you may want to do some simple research. A little checking would have shown you the wonder snapper site http://www.chelydra.org

Snappers make wonderful pets as long as you know what you are doing. They can be aggressive and inflict nasty bites- big snappers can severely injure a finger, but not take it off.

If you have other turtles, they should be fine as long as you provide plenty of space, and the right habitats. Red-ear Sliders don't want the same kind of space as a snapper does.

As far as legality goes, if you are going to break the law, it is always smarter to do it with knowledge. In many places it is illegal to buy, sell, own, or collect snappers. In my state, they count as game fish and you need a permit.

You don't clearly say if it is wild or captive bred. Know that wild turtles are almost always parasite infested, and the parasites will infest the other turtles- and combining parasites with the stress of captivity can kill them.

Wow, your mom's a genious. Research your species before bringing them home. Snapping turtles are some of the most fierce turtles out there. You need to be extremely careful or else, yes, it will bite your arm off. These usually do horribly as pets and if it was wild caught, you really need to take it back where you (or your mom) found it.

A baby probably won't bite your arm off, but you do need to be careful. Turtles and Tortioses are best to just be looked at. Make sure the turtle is healthy and happy. And just in case you want a turtle thats a pet, a russian tortiose is amazing! Good luck with that adorable baby turtle!
