Though I know exactly what you mean, it's hard to put it to words... as sometimes I'll feel some vague fondness for something and realize that the affection comes from the person I associate with that object or sound.
I've been a Coast Guard brat since I was a babe, only in the last few years have I had a surge of affection for the C130s as they pass above. They mean family to me, my brother works and flies in them all over the world. Before Pop retired he directed their pilots from the Control Tower. Before Dad retired he flew for the Coast Guard, now he helps direct their IT programs.
But that isn't someone gone from my life, huh...
For me, it's always music.....
Queensryche for Sandy... when I hear Suite Judy Blue Eyes I think of AJ...for Stace it's always been (sweet) Melissa though other Allman Brothers songs bring me back to the Sandman...old timey jazz is Chris...Black Crowes is a couple different people, including the haze-filled concert seen with Ed...Supertramp came into focus with Rachel and is now a much deeper bonded friend...Eagles Hotel Cali is Todd and Peaceful Easy Feeling is Bear...Safety Dance is By...and I can't forget Superman is for Keanu!
Babe has many songs... a few named? From me to him, Not the Only One. From him to me, You Are So Beautiful (sweet guy I tell ya) and then to each other, Into The Mystic...
And yet all these songs and these fellas- they are my past, my memories, my wonder and texture in a life that might have been plainer without them. I thank them and the artists for sharing themselves with me.
Thanks too Moon, for allowing me to share with you!

Someone who showed me where the elevator was, (I have absolutely no sense of direction) & I knew at once there was going to come something beautiful out of it. Just starting out as a painter, I learned how to really SEE the essence of things, how "negative" space isn't really at all, to stop clutching my brush like a pencil, to relinquish "control" & let the brush, the paints, the surface of the canvas come together with my muse. That creativity was also serendipitious. That fountains, when taken in slow motion with the camcorder were silver wings of a bird. & you could see yourself in blowing bubbles, your image drifting & then vanishing in a quick mist. To love life far more than I had thought I did. Died tragically, but all my memories are beautiful. Two artists, one much further evolved....
That if I listened, there was music in the wings of a hawk.
Edit: Just want to say that I love your questions. They are evocative. They take me on journeys unpredictable.

Well I have had several past relationships, both single and married...
In my single one I was shown how to make a pea salad and it is so good, I have never found anyone who can make it as good as me...
I learned it from a young boy I loved in college who is now passed away...
I then married and in my first marriage I learned to make deviled eggs and love Brussels sprouts...
In my second marriage I learned to make guacamole and enchiladas both are just wonderful...
I am now in my third marriage and have perfected all the above foods even better than the original ones...
I am a good cook with all other things too, but those are my specialties...

LOL! Thanks for asking this - I dated a guy who introduced me to the joy of jalapenos. 'You can never have too many of them on nachos', he always said. To this day, every time I order nachos, I think of him and hope he's doing well.
:D
