It's not uncommon for them to hover just off the bottom of the tank, just above the gravel. They have a territory and will stake out the middle of this territory and hang out there to defend it. As long as the fish is not laying on the bottom and seems to be able to hold itself up right in the water, you have nothing to worry about.

There are hundreds of cichlids commonly available and their behaviours can differ as much as their size, color, shape, natural biotope, and diet.

If you want any real useful advice when it comes to your cichlids you must mention what type you have. Some are fairly inactive and will hover on the bottom, others are very active and this would be a sign of not doing well.

Not usually unless they are having issues. Start with a water sample test at an Aquarium shop and go from there....
