I tried the suggestions from the 3 answers I received. No results! Any other ideas?

Reset the parameter RAM. To do that, restart while holding these 4 keys: option + command + "R" + "P" and hold them until you notice the screen blink on and off about three times. Then release all the keys.

If it still has vertical lines, boot to the OS install CD. If it still shows vertical lines, it needs hardware service. Either call Apple or take it to an authorized Apple dealer, tell them what you did and you'll get a box shipped to you that you will use to ship it to them for repair. If it is more than one year old, you'll need to pay for the repair with a credit card.

i dont know what answers those were,
but try re-installing the graphics drivers
try re-installing directx

is it a desktop or laptop ?

with a desktop, you can reseat the board
