Proofs are used to deduce that something must be true, based upon drawing stepwise conclusions from pre-existing facts. They are used similarly in other professions to demonstrate conclusively that the answer to a question is correct.

Proofs are used to prove mathematical theorems, such as the famous Pythagorean Theorem. They establish that a mathematical conjecture is in fact true.

I know of no other profession that uses proof.

Proofs take us from what we know to what we are trying to find out. We apply bits of knowledge, laws of addition or multiplication or geometry identies. Eventually we can find the answer.

This has a variety of uses.

For example, let's say that I have from Pheonix to Dallas. Now I need to go to Dallas, but I am in Los Angeles. I don't have to figure out my whole route. All I have to do is figure out how to get from Los Angeles to Phoenix. Once I am in Phoenix, I know the rest of the way.

Or lets say I have adopted a new cat. I have had cats before, but this is a different cat. My new cat has different properties from my old cat. Perhaps it does not like catnip. Perhaps it likes floor toys instead of dangling toys. But I know it needs fresh food and water and a way to toilet. These are the cat axioms. All triangles have angles that equal 180 degrees, and all cats must have fresh water.
