I'm not sure where this is leading to, but if you associate the presence of, or the effect of, a person or experience, then you could use a perticular flavour or colour. Vanilla is a basic flavouring for ice cream, but other flavours, such as chocolate or mint, might evoke certain memories of a person or thing dear to your past.
There may be a person who meant something to you in some way, but there might be someone who was that little more treasured, in which you could compare them as flavours. As Shakespeare wrote: What is a rose by any other name, that it should smell as sweet', or words to that effect. In other words, if a person or thing reminds you of a taste or smell, then vanilla is perhaps the essence of that memory. Good question, though, and worth an answer.
