1998 dodge caravan.....when I accelerate the belt starts to squeal. Also when idling for awhile, it overheats.

replaced a/c belt, still squeals when I accelerate. will overheat when idling.

Old, dirty, oily, cracked, or loose belt.

This is very common problem with these vehicles if it has the 3.0 engine in it and after you have verified that the drive belt is indeed the correct one, the belt is of high quality and not some cheep one and it is tighten then the problem is the compressor.

What is happening is that the compressor is not getting adequate oil for lubrication, you can discharge the a/c system and add 3 ounces oil into the suction side of the compressor and pull a vacuum and then recharge it.

This will in about 50% of the vehicles that I have worked on fix the problem but in the remaining vehicles you will have to completely replace the compressor, receiver drier and exp block valve also if you have a rear unit you will have replace the rear exp block valve as well.

The belt may be loose.

Are you sure it's the belt? I ask because it seems reasonable that a bad bearing in an AC compressor would cause squealing, but I would guess it would squeal continuously if that were the problem.

It's loose. Doesn't take much of that to ruin a belt, so get it tightened right away.
