You mean when you let it idle at the curb.

If it is for more then about 3 minutes or so you waste gas (not too cheap now adays) and dump that much more exhaust gas into the atmosphere.

BUT

If you stop the car to run in to get something or for just a few minutes, turning off the car and then re-starting it puts more pollutants into the atmosphere since the startup fumes contain more unburned gas and carbon then that of a warm and running engine.

if you keep your car running it will eventually hit something...then lets say it hits a gas station and it explodes then all that smoke will pour into the atmosphere, yes, bad things can happen when you keep your car running...

It gets stinkier and harder to breath. Plus you waste money on gas.
