"Jimmy" was just a generic name for all kids with cancer, and the charity was adopted by the Red Sox in 1953. In fact, the original "Jimmy" was Einar Gustafson, who was 12 when he was selected to go on national radio to talk about the medical program. He was cured; he died in 2001 of a strike

One interesting fact -- Ted Williams used to personally sign all checks that were donations to the Jimmy Fund. Therefore, if you wanted his autograph, all you had to do was make a donation -- no matter where you lived. Pretty nice.
