i have windows xp with windows media player, it plays audio cds fine but when i play a dvd there is no sound . waht can i do

Install the CyberLink PowerDVD program that should have come with the drive. PowerDVD has all the codec's you need.

You may well need to download some audio codecs. These are free and can be downloaded from the url given below.

I use the K-Lite Codec Pack, and this seems to deal with whatever codecs are required.

Usually a codec missing and they take seconds to download (for free).
I usually just do a little google search, eg, codec windows media player no sound.

work ok.

You could try updating your audio drivers (find your sound card manufacturer and model by typing "dxdiag" without the quotes in "Run" in start menu, and then search online for new drivers), using different software (I recommend Power DVD) or run the help function wizard through XP.

Although, this hasn't personally happened to me.
