it is a 1978 usa penny with very(very very) fine black stripes on the front side going over the top of the penny.Kind of hard to notice with naked eye, but when magnified the stripes are very prominate and very perfect(straight / parallel,...)I tried washing the stripes off several times, only made them more apperant. Any ideas? Could not find any explanation on any sites.

stop washing your coins or this coin....those lines may have occurred after the coin was minted.....with your magnification is it possible to determine if the stripes occurred before striking or after,,,
the only thing you are accomplishing by washing is degrading the value of the coin....

It is not a rare collectors item and the person who said so has no idea what she is taking about. Guess she needs the 2 points. It sounds like the coin has environment damage. It never left the mint in the condition you have stated. People do the strangest things to coins. It could be caused by many things, usually chemicals are involved, as well as tape to make the straight lines. Non of the processes at the mint would do what you said. If you can scan it then send a scan or photo to answerman2@aol.com. He writes a coin clinic column for Numismatic News and helps with coin questions. Don't bother unless you send a scan or photo with your email. He won't help unless you do. I still know it was done by some one after it left the mint and is not an error coin but a damaged one. Hope this points you in the right direction.

It is a very rare collectors item. Hold on to it and it could be worth millions of dollars. Just dont chip or brake it apart :)
