When Greyhounds either get too old or are not "earning their keep", they are slaughtered in the most brutal way imaginable. There are many rescue groups that accept retired Greys and find homes for them. Greyhounds are kind, gentle, wonderful dogs that don't bark much and do not require a lot of activity. They are wonderful "couch potatoes" who only need to be let to run about once a week. Other than that, they are great pets.

They could be euthanized, put into a shelter, but some of them are rescued by greyhound rescue groups and have a chance to find a home. There are so many dogs put in shelters and are cruelly treated. If you are going to get a dog, perhaps a greyhound, adopt one from a terrible situation instead of buying one that will get a home even if you don't buy them. Maybe you want a mixed breed dog- they are all of the best breeds rolled into one! Did I also mention that you can usually adopt a dog from a shelter for around $100 complete with vaccinations, spay/neuter etc... and no matter what dog you get make sure you spay/neuter them. Even if there aren't any other dogs around for them to have puppies, they are healthier, less aggressive, and it can reduce the risk of many diseases.

They have Greyhound racing in Wisconsin. When they are no longer able to race, they find a home for them through individuals. Almost like an adoption. Old for them is very long so it's still a young dog that the people would be getting.

If they are lucky, the Greyhound Rescue League finds them a happy loving home.

If they are unlucky, they die, unless they win lots of races and get used for breeding.

FWIW, greyhounds have very short careers. Some, especially loosers, might last only one season before being retired. Even winners get retired in 3 or 4 seasons.

They are often euthanized or dumped in shelters.
How awful, i know.
That is why so many rescue organizations exist to save these poor pups! Most are around 4 years old when they retire.

The unlucky ones who don't get taken in by rescue groups wind up euthanized or used for animal testing.

They are cruelly 'dumped' the racing industry dosen't want them anymore. Its really mean, and they are called ex-racers. Lots of people like then though, there are clubs for saving them and re-homing them.
