If you mean politically the 20th century began when the German people united to become a nation in 1870. This was during the Franco-Prussian War. I think that this was the most important event since the founding of America. This changed Europe and eventually the world. All the major wars and political events in the 20th century stem from this event. For instance the powerful German state led to World War I & II, the Holocaust and death of 6 million Jews. Which led to the creation of the State of Israel. Which led to Arab nationalism and Arab terrorism. I hope that this has been a help to you.

The 20th century did start in January 1st 1900, but nothing special happened that day. So many historians speak of the long 19th century that lasted until 1914 because that was the moment that the world really changed. At 1910 it was still quite like 1890, after 1920 it was very different. As to why and how did that happened, its a really big story.

No. The 20th century began in 1900. World War 1 didn't start until 1914. But before 1900 there was tension in Europe that could start the first world war, and it eventually did.
