all depends if the car takes R-12 or R-134a. if it takes R12, then you cant do it yourself, it is illegal for a shop to sell R-12 to anyone without a EPA license. if it is R-134a you can buy the self recharge cans and fill it up yourself. however you have to take special care to not overfill the system as that can cause severe damage to the system.

Depends on the year of the vehicle. Pre 1996 cars and truck you have R12 freon. You have to sucked out by a shop or someone who can recover it. Any thing after '96 you should be able just to add if it's low. It's really not that hard just to add a little or even a lot of freon. Go to www.advanceautoparts.com they have some video clinics that you can watch and see if it's something you can do.

i assume you mean charge? you can buy a can with a gauge at walmart for about 30 bucks. it is important to check the pressure first. too much refrigerant is a bad thing. the kit i bought not only had the refrigerant but had leak stop built in. you attach the gauge to the low pressure side and follow directions on box. not too hard. if you have a huge leak, well then u are out of luck and will have to have it professionally repaired. good luck.

i own a repair shop, and it don't need changed unless your converting it to the newer type 134-a other than that if it already has this in it you can re-charge it but if its got the old r-12 in it,id have it done, its a little more complicated than it sounds like it is,and you can mess the compressor up real bad on it also ,if your not experienced with doing it,good luck hope this helps.

AC work is best left to the professionals. You could certainly do it yourself, but you would have to buy a couple thousand dollars worth of equipment.

Why do you want to change it? But to answer your question, that is a job best left to a trained professional.
