Can't tell you about Stop and Shop, but closing stores is a fairly routine part of life in chain retail. Large companies select store locations based on a variety of demographic parameters which tend to correlate to high traffic. Sometimes the demographics are there, but traffic isn't (it's called an outlier in statistics); sometimes the demographics change and traffic deteriorates. Either way, stores get closed...
