Any time you have a negative exponent for a value, it indicates that you need to take the recipricol. For instance x^(-1) = 1/x. So...

4^(-1/2) = 1/[4^(1/2)]

The 1/2 power is, in fact the square root function. So...

1/[4^(1/2)] = 1/√4 = 1/2

Your answer is 1/2
