This is a question near and dear to my heart the masons and Freemasons are the same entity. Prince Hall masonry was established for African Americans that were not allowed to join in the early days of the US due to prejudice. Most Grand Lodges now recognize Prince Hall Masons. Co-Masonry is a group that claims to be Masons but has no connection or recognition by a sanctioned Masonic organization. It’s like me starting a club and claiming its Masonic but with no charter that allows them to conduct ritual. The Grand Lodge of England claims the organization of freemasonry in the 1700's which is ludicrous the first Grand Lodge was established then. It is not known how far back Masonry goes but Rosslyn Chapel has Masonic carvings and Templar carvings intermingled throughout including a man receiving our first degree next to a templar carving this was carved in the 1300’s. The York Rite line also embraces this notion as you are knighted and become a templar at the completion. My opinion is there is a definite connection is there concrete proof no. There is however a lot of circumstantial evidence some extremely compelling. It is my opinion as it is of many Brother Masons that the Templar and the Freemasons are one in the same. Any questions feel free to E-Mail me and I will answer what I can.

If you are talking about the fraternal organisation, masons and freemasons are the exact same group.

Many historians see multiple connections from the Knights Templar, and so many draw the conclusion that Freemasons are direct decendants of them.

However there is no definitive answer as to where the Freemasons come from, others say it is descended from the Ancient Mystery Schools, others from the Operative Guilds of Europe.

The truth is no one actually knows for sure, it is all speculation and no one idea is without flaw and there is no common view.
