Well, it is a scientific fact that the act of chewing relieves stress and also heightens concentration. So...that's why alot of people choose dinner for a first date too, because chewing, like laughing, relaxes the mind!

ever since the early era of baseball, players have always been chewing on something. earlier, players would chew tobacco (thus spitting it out when done) and now to premote healthy values, the players chew gum and spit it because it almost serves the same purpose as what the older baseball players did. I guess they spit the gum because they need to get rid of excess spit.

It feels good, that's why. Also, some of them aren't chewing gum--that's tobacco they're working over in their mouths. Fortunately, this diseased practice is on the decline.
Also, you can get a lot of dirt and grit in your mouth playing ball, and spitting it out is better than swallowing it.
Spitting is O.K. It's the scratching and cup adjusting I can do without having to see anymore.

That reminds me of the Jeff Foxworthy joke, that goes: "You might be a redneck if you DONT think that baseball players scratch, spit, and chew too much."
