Like if your family is Italian, Spanish, Greek, French, etc.
AND dont say yes I am American and speak English because EVERYONEs family came from somewhere else and even Native American's have their own language. Please respect the question. This question assumes we all speak English.

its not ancestry because your immediate family can speak English and your grandparents may not. AND its not ethnicity because there is more than one language within any ethnicity.
AND I said dont say American! THAT is what the question is asking---if you are American and speak English do you speak anything else that is part of your family's previous nationality?

No, my father came from Greece and for some strange reason never taught me to speak Greek. I think he focused mostly on merging in with the American culture and forget all about the country he came from, which is a shame I think... I've visited my family in Greece a number of times, and I couldn't directly communicate with them, I need my father to translate. My father is an engineer though, so maybe he wasn't equipped to teach me another language.

I picked up a few Polish swear words from my family, but I can't speak the language fluently. Damn sure can't spell it either. I'll throw out some Polish swearing in public now & then if I think yelling english ones would be too inappropriate.

No, I canNOT speak French. But as a kid growing up I could understand what my parents were saying. They used to speak french so we kids didn't know what they were saying or talking about. But in a matter of a few years I could understand what they were saying. NOT every word, but enough so I at least knew what they were talkin bout.

Yes, I speak my mother and father's native tongue. I think it is important to learn your parent's native language because you show an interest in learning about your nationality and heritage. It makes my parents proud when I speak in our language.
