A good place to buy a pet is either from a breeder or from a animal rescue they can help you to find a pet that needs your help with the pet that matches your life style. Depending on what kind of pet i.e. dog, cat please do not get from a pet store. Some stores contribute to what are called pet mills and the animals that are sold sometimes are so ill that they sometimes can pass away the day that you purchase them or have illnesses that are so bad that you will pay lots of money in vet bills. If not if you trust the person a friend who is no longer able to take care of their pet. I hope all woks out. Good luck on your search.

Look on the Internet for "pets in your area". Narrow your search to dog, cat or whatever you want.
Just a tip from a pet lover and pet owner, the best pets are adopted.
Check out your local animal shelters, rescued animals (private or other).
Adopted pets are so loving and thankful to be finally given a home. They are full of love and want to be loved. AND, in many cases, a pet is not adopted, the ultimate destination is inevitable. Sad but true.
ADOPT! It's cheaper, always have their shots & documentation, and they NEED YOU to love them.
Ps. Pet Shops ARE THE WORST place. Many reasons, to many to get into but, the animals are not what the shop advertises.
ADOPT!

well, i suggest a pet store, the pets have been checked and usually have a guarantee of some kind, however pet stores are more expensive. if you look in your local paper you can often find the pet you are looking for, look for the ads that say vet checked, or current on shots and worming. if you do buy from an independent seller ask to see the vet reports or reciepts. good luck.

What type of pet?
If you want a dog, consider adopting from the ASPCA, SPCA (depends on which organization is in your city) or the animal shelters in your city, depending on which organization is in your city.
Also call or go to the City Animal Shelter in your city, it's often called a "kill shelter" because they kill the dogs if they are not adopted!
For other pets, go to: Petco or Petsmart for fish, birds and other small animals.
Please give a homeless dog a warm and loving home!

Do not buy. There are so many unwanted animals in the world. Save one from being euthanized. Petfinder has many rescued animals. All the animals in Pet Smart are rescued. Also check out your local animal shelter, spca, humane society or other no kill shelters. They are all in the business of saving animals.

I like places like Petsmart or PetCo. They have lots of different animals for you to look at, so you can decide what best fits your lifestyle.
If you want a dog or cat, I suggest the pound. Most states require that the pound spade/neuter, make sure they have all their shots and are healthy before selling them to the public.

Do not go to any places that are independant they may get their dogs from puppy mills,if u don't want a dog though it doesn't really matter as long as the building is clean and safe for the animals.
