With the gigantic pet food recall I have read in many places that it is common practice to use euthanised animals in commercial pet food & even road kill! This is really gross, but they feed dead animals in meal to chickens & cows, why now to pets?! Actually it wouldn't surprise me one bit anymore! Also, why do you think they 'still' haven't found the 'source' of the contaminant? It sure seems they would know by now!

It's not supposed to. The rendering company has to know if an animal died a natural death or was euthanized because they cant sell euthanized animal carcasses to pet food companies. But who really knows if that is always the case.

Well, most of the dog and cat food produced is made from left over cuttings (feet, eyes, boney bits etc) from meat production for human consumption - just ground up and stuff is added and then its tinned! They wont use euthanised animals that have been euthanised with drugs (barbituates etc), thats too dangerous, but the food for snakes and other reptiles that are whole dead animals (mostly rodents, but also birds and other things) are euthanised using carbon dioxide. I dont think they would eithanise animals to make pet food, surely it would cost too much to raise THAT animal in the first place... dunno, maybe though. And I am pretty sure no (ligitimate) company uses road kill!

They most certainly do!

Read "Foods Pets Die For" by Ann N Martin for all the gruesome details. You will be shocked and amazed.

As to the pet recall.
Well, the pet food industry is a multi-million dollar industry. They don't want to "cop" to anything that will make them lose one red cent.

Sigh FDA study over 100 brands of food tested - did find small traces of barbituates. NO FOOD was positive for dog or cat DNA....
Possibly the traces of barbituate came form ethised horses...
