yes definitely! the stocks or the birch, hooligans wouldn't be so cocky then. capital punishment should be fully brought back too, why should my taxes be paying for murderers, rapists and paedophiles to be fed and looked after in prisons. we are far too namby pamby in this country and that's why it's going down hill fast!

Absolutely - we've been having a spate of vandalism here in Guernsey, a few cases of arson and graffiti being sprayed on properties claiming to be responsible for the arson. It's likely to be youngsters so the courts won't be heavy enough - if I had my way, I would put them in stocks in the town square and let everyone come and have a go at them - make them spend their saturdays there for the next few weeks - that should give them plenty of time to think.

This entirely depends on whether crime and criminality is held in contempt by the population. From my experience working as Security at a UK Criminal courthouse, being 'done' is a matter of pride for a lot of the population, so those who are put in the stocks are likely to be regarded as folk heroes, rather than as people worthy of societies' contempt.
The simplest thing is to have a vote on it. Blair's government has virtually destroyed the principle of Criminal Law in this country, replacing Common Law with offences of Strict Liability.
Therefore, the logical reaction must be community law - but the community has proved itself to be totally irresponsible, to wit, knife and gun crime.
The stocks would result in the criminal being pelted with rotten fruit, and the enforcers of law being similarly pelted. CS gas and rubber bullets would then be deployed.
Maybe, we need to take a long look at society and its reaction to crime, and start again.

Im all in favour of the stocks, the birch, hard labour and the long drop as these are all a lot more effective than the punishments we have today!

Yes and for worse crimes I would bring back the birch and whipping,I dont mean to sound vicious but I think a lot of crime could be prevented if measures like this were taken.

Good idea especially for kids since the one thing they care about is being separated from the group and held up to ridicule on their own. However we can go one better. instead of three strikes you cut one finger off for each offense. if they get caught a fourth time cut the hand off.

Definitely. Let's have some public humiliation for the scumbags at least, they get away with far too much nowadays wearing their ASBO's like a badge of honour, what a joke.

I can just hear the screams from the ACLU now!
The stocks were a very effective crime deterrent because they were so humiliating. I don't think we will ever see them again.
