Traditionally, women were considered property, not citizens.

An unmarried woman was the property of her father, and when she was married her father would "give her away" to her new husband, thus transferring ownership.

As such, a man at the right to do whatever he wants with his property- including beating her and rape.

Now, we have abandoned those traditional moral values.

Instead, we value each person as an individual- this change in the traditional role of women has resulted in:

If a husband forces himself on his wife it's rape, and a crime.
If a husband beats his wife, again- a crime.
A woman can get a divorce even if the man does not agree to it.
A woman can move out of her father's house even if she is not married.
Women can vote and run for public office, including the presidency.

That's the thing with traditional moral values- there really is no such thing. They constantly change, even to a HUGE degree over a very short time, yet people think they are eternal.

At the establishment of the US, it was acceptable and moral to own slaves. Slavery was acceptable under a capitalist model.

Both US parties (Republicans and Democrats) now no longer follow this traditional moral or political philosophy.
