Find a rich person! Kidding aside, the legal paperwork to getting corporate status can be expensive and a long process; also remember if you are a public corporation you will be required by law to file certain financial reports each year with the IRS. I would recommend starting your business first as a private business then as you grow beyond your personal financial means, meet with a lawyer who specializes in this stuff about going public. Its a great way to raise cash quickly for your business but theres a lot of liability and risks involved.

Educate yourself and read the good books "The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything" by Guy Kawasaki. Also read "Blue Ocean Strategy" by Kim to separate yourself from your competition. Then visit http://www.incorporate.com/ and educate yourself some more. You will need to register your business name and entity with your state (around $50 at least in Michigan where I live) and decide what type (entity) of corporation you want to be (LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, 501c-3). Do your research and register a name that has an available web url to match. You can see if your name is available at www.domainsbot.com. You do not need to buy a business plan or incorporation papers, just find a free template that comes close to the business type you are considering then adjust content and insert the name of your business where you need it. Visit www.wmeu.org for my contact information if you desire more one-on-one free discussion on the next steps over the phone or via email.

Go to the BUSINESS link of your state's website. You can register your corporation online (but, there will be a cost ... usually less than $100).

Your state's website is likely ...

www.ST.gov, where ST is the 2-letter abbreviation for the state. If the 2-letter abbreviation doesn't work, try www.NAME.gov, where NAME is the full name of the state (like www.UTAH.gov).
