I am majoring in psychology and I love it. Some of the classes are difficult, but if it is a passion of yours you will probably love it. My advice is to pay attention in all of your other classes. You will be faced with a bunch of core classes when you start university.
If your reasoning for taking a year off is to save money to attend university it sounds like you are thinking ahead and planning. However, if you really want a year off to vegetate and are using money as an excuse I would advise against waiting. It is so easy to keep putting things off until you end up wasting several years.

If you're dedicated to saving money during a year off after college you can do it. Commit yourself to saving money during that year rather than spending it... set up a savings plan so that you save more than you spend.

If you are interested in the subject and the instructor is good you won't care how hard the coursework is.

The best thing for you to do now is make good grades in high school, be involved in one or two extracurricular activities. Don't overdo it.

Try volounteering in the psych ward of a hospital. Might give you a leg up and let you see if its something you really want to do.
