The industrial revolution provided for economic prosperity for the masses. Without it, most people would have lead substance agrarian lives on small family plots. This also lead to the mechanization of farms greatly increasing food production. Read about McCormick. The harms were a great rush to the cities leading to overcrowding and disease as well as exploitation of the poorer less educated members of society.
