but the second flush filled the bowel again without the water going down the drain. The water is swirling in the right direction. Main floor toilet flushes fine. ?????

The basement toilet could be going into a ejector pit where it gets pumped up to a sewer line which is higher than the basement floor. If this is the case. The float on the pump could be stuck. It may work intermittently as the obstruction shifts positions. If you do have an ejector pit and pump, first try to shake the pipe and cord and see if the pump kicks on. If not, you will have to open the pit and manually clear the pump...yuck! If you don't have a pit and the main sewer line is under the basement floor, then keep rodding.

Back with the auger, whatever is in the system, is still there. Try again, if the same ting happens then you might want to get a professional in to take a look.

you may have foriegn object lodged, auger moved it but its still there. you may have to pull toilet and flip upside down
