Fine, we have to tip in restaurants. (Although the server took a low paying job dependent upon tips and their bosses don't take that into account when they price the menus) Now everyone thinks they deserve a tip!! The guy who hands me a coffee at Dunkin Donuts, the gal who makes my sandwhich at Subway, the gal who scoops ice cream at the local shop....why are we expected to tip THESE people?? You didn't drop my donut...here's 20%?? Does this make anyone else angry??

re: KINDOFKITTY - I'm am not cheap, nor am I ignorant. I do tip at restaurants, but I don't feel I need to drop a dollar in a tip jar if I stop for a 99 cent burger. By the way, I'm a firefighter and EMT...what percentage tip should I be given for cutting you out of your car or putting out the fire in your oven?? After all, aren't all jobs crafts?? How many stupid people do you think I have to deal with?? What's that sound?? Oh, that's your glass house breaking.

I don't think you are cheap at all...I feel exactly the same way. I hate tipping people. I work in childcare and I don't get a freakin tip for every diaper I change. IT'S MY JOB! I think people should just pay at least minimum wage everywhere and completely eliminate the need for tips. No one deserves a tip, especially for doing their job. And if they don't like it, find another job!

You are right. You shouldnt have to tip them. And let me give you the most logical reason why.
At those types of places, those employees by law are recieving at least minimum wage. Sometimes better. They are not working for tips.
Unlike at most resteraunts. There is a clause in most state laws that exempts a resteraunt owner from having to pay its employees minimum wage. And most resteraunt owners take advantage of the clause. As a matter of fact I think it is a clause in the federal law ( if you look at the information posted on the wall at any place of business where all employees can see, suddenly I cant remeber what its called..but its about your wages and your rights)
Anyhow, When I was a waitress some years back, I was making $2.13 an hour. I worked my @ss off for tips.
Oh, I also just read that you are a fire fighter and what kind of tip should you get....
If it were up to me, I would give you every thing I have in thanks for saving me or my family...
But in reality I cant do that so i would pay it forward. And probably give to a charity that helps you guys do your job better and safer.
Thanks.

This also makes me angry. I've been a server and a bartender and consider myself a very good tipper. However, I very often pay with debit cards at "non-restaurants" and there will be a spot for a tip on the credit card slip. I feel awkward not leaving a tip so I've started paying cash at these places.
Also there was a self service only gas station I used to go to that had a tip jar on the counter. Have 20% for taking my money.

Tipping at places like these is not expected but accepted if the service is good. At sit down restaurants and for bar tenders you are to tip according to how the service was. 20% is the going rate for tips these days but only if the service was excellent and then it goes down from there.

I've never heard of someone expecting a tip in a fast food restaurant, but I do tip for really good service in sit-down restaurants. It really is hard to find.

I only tip if the person is being a waiter/waitress. Like I don't tip at Sonic when they bring me the food, because they don't get me refills, check on my satisfaction, etc.
And when I'm at buffet's where all they do is refill my drink, I only tip 15% instead of 20%. I figure, they're doing less work per table, so cover more tables, so don't need as big a tip.

I've never heard of tipping at fast food places. And I have been all over the USA. Except Alaska. You must be there. Or Mars.

I don't know where you live, but where I am, noone in a fast food restaurant expects, nor receives, any tips.

Yes, and I don't tip at all, even in restaurants. Like you said, those people took jobs they know are low paying, and that's thier own dam fault. Everyone knows what they're going to get paid before they take a job, that's why I would never work in a restaurant, because I wouldn't want me paying my rent to be in the hands of strangers. It's just common sense. Get a job that pays well. It's not that difficult.
