Yes.

To take a spiritual path, you have to abstain from the world of flesh. Some people will tell you they are spiritual but are very motivated towards self gratification. They are not spiritual. The mistake some people make is to believe that as a result of celibacy, preist's become paedophiles. They don't, if somebody has paedophile tendencies, they may become a priest or a monk believing that devotion to God will make them turn away from what is evil in themselves but what is in side doesn't go away.

If a spiritual leader marries he or she has to concern themselves with their own family life they can't represent God's will to mankind. They need to say things which may people won't like and they have to do it from aposition of the spirit world. You can't do that when you are somebody's lover.
Many of the things Jesus said were directly about the necessity of turning away from the world of flesh - especially the things quoted in the Gnostic scriptures. It is the same in every faith - when you take a spiritual path you give up sex because you are no longer a part of the human race, have no gender and are just a spiritual being. Read up on Buddhism.

Can a human live without sex?

Over 15 years so far for me and it will be for the rest of my life.

P.S. I'm a Gnostic, not a Catholic. It's easy to be celibate and it makes me much happier than being with somebody. Other people have more of an issue with my celibacy than I do. It hasn't made me want to abuse children either. I do feel very distant from the rest of mankind and I can't understand why people are blindly allowing their own lives to get more and more dysfunctional.

Well, many in the catholic church who are supposed to be celibate, have a little something on the side.

A human being can live without sex, but it destroys you if you don't acknowledge you have a sexuality. In my opinion, the reason why pedophilia has been so prevalent in the catholic church is because celibacy isn't a natural urge and shouldn't be forced on anyone. More than not being able to have sex, they are taught that any sexual urges at all are sinful. This drives a person mad.

The pope has dedicated his life to the Service of God. Being married would be a distraction from that work. Lots of people go without sex.... its not a necessity. , it's in a lot of ways, a luxury.

A human being can live without sex. You produce reproductive cells on a need-only basis. You don't explode from a lack of sex.

Abstinence and not marrying is part of their religious requirements - they are married to the religion/church.

Obviously the answer to the second question is yes as there are many religious people (and non religious people) who do not have sex for whatever their reason(s).

He is supposed to devote all his energies into the faith.
Having a wife or partner would take away some of his attention.
Personally, it seems to me he is going against the bible as god said "go forth and multiply" which he is certainly not doing.

It's a part of the catholic faith. I t derives from the time when Rome was trying to christianise its citizens who were used to the priests of their religions being celibate. In order to make christian priests seem more 'normal' they decided it was best for them to be celibate too.
