I'm looking mostly for past NBA players, current players won't do it for me.

Everyone likes to say Wilt, but there's no doubt in my mind that the best is Kareem Abdul- Jabbar. Just look at his accomplishments, both as a team player and an individual! Wilt was dominant, yes, but his dominance was magnified by the sheer lack of anyone around who could guard him! Wilt has many accomplishments as an individual, but that alone doesn't make him the best ever sans MJ. Neither does championship rings, else Bill Russell would take the cake with flying colors! Kareem has the best stats, awards and championship hardware to make him all- around the greatest player, even when compared to MJ. Any honest fan of basketball would have to acknowledge this!
Update: I checked, and the only stat that Wilt beats both Kareem and MJ in are career rebounds, career rebounding average, and career points per game, which he only beat Kareem by 6 and tied MJ for. MJ and Kareem both have 6 championships. Kareem has 6 NBA MVP awards to MJs 5, his career field goal percentage is .559 to MJs .497. MJ beats out Kareem in individual defensive awards and scoring titles, but Kareem beats MJ in rebounding and blocks awards (obviously because of the positions they played). Both were Rookie of the Year. Both men were All- Stars all but one season that they played. When you consider that Kareem was able to do that 19 times despite his age, that is an impressive stat!

Even with Jordan, the best ever is Wilt Chamberlain.
When you consider Kareem, Bird and Oscar Robertson as well, Jordan might rank fifth overall.
