What you have is the 'standard' format of writing an x,y equation:

y = mx + c

where m is the slope and c is the 'intercept'

Here, m = 1 (and normally, a factor of 1 is not written because multiplying something by one does not change it)

---

Most of the time, when you'll be asked again, the equation will be written differently, for example:

16 x - 16 y = -8

and you'll have to move stuff around until you are left with only y on one wide and something that looks like mx + c on the other.

For the example:
1) multiply everything (on both sides) by -1.
-1*16 x - (-1*16)y = -1*(-8)
-16 x + 16 y = +8

2) add 16 x on both sides

-16 x + 16 x + 16 y = 16 x + 8
16 y = 16 x + 8

3) divide everything by 16

(16/16)y = (16/16)x + (8/16)
y = (1)x + 1/2

(I left the 1 in there to show the slope)

---

Don't forget that as 'granny' it is sufficient for you to say: "that's easy: solve the equation so that y is on one side and everything else is on the other, then you'll have the slope." and you can show them the example.

Because if they have that as homework, it is because they would have seen it in class...

The equation is in y-intercept form, meaning y = a*x + b, where a and b are numbers. The number a is the slope, the number b is the y-intercept, or the point where the line crosses the y-axis. In your case, a=1, so 1 is the slope of the line. If the equation is in any other form, say 2y-x=1, you must first convert the equation into y-intercept form before finding the slope.

the slope, better known as the gradient, is the factor which you multiply x by to reach y. 1/2 is the intercept point.

This should be easier to understand if you consider y=mx + c
c is the constant where the line crosss the axis, ie when x = 0 y = 0.5 in this case and when y = 0 x = -0.5
m is the gradient, which in this case = 1.

if the equation was y = 4x +7, the gradient, or slope would be 4.

The slope intercept equation is defined as
y = mx + b

Your equation
y = 1*x + 1/2 or y = x + 1/2

So the slope is one and the y intercept is 1/2.

a line can have the form of y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. therefore, by analysis, this line has a slope of 1 and a y-intercept of 0.5... :)

slope is the number that you multiply x by, in your problem 1.

Also the formula for slope is (y2-y1)/(x2-x1). Where (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) are points on the line. So find two points on the line and confirm.

there is a 1 infront of x, that that is the slope

y = mx + b
m = slope

y = 1x + 1/2
slope = 1
