A person dies because of two factors. Most likely, a major blood vessel is cut, and the person bleeds out--loses so much blood that they cannot get enough oxygen to critical organs like the brain and heart.

It is also possible that a critical organ can be disrupted so that it can no longer function. The heart and brainstem are two examples, although if a person's liver is destroyed, they can die unless they can get a liver transplant.

In the old days, people could receive non-critical gunshot wounds and die as a result of infection. President McKinley was shot and died a week later from gangrene. He had been shot twice, and while the first bullet was removed surgically, doctors did not know where the second was. Edison volunteered to use his new metal detector to locate the bullet, but this failed. No one realized that this was because the president was lying in a bed with a mattress that contained metal coil springs.

Depends where the gunshot hit. If hits any internal organs like Kidney, Liver, Heart the death is instanteous because of bleeding and there by collapse of entire system. If hit any where else externally person can be saved if aid given in time.

The mere shock of the bullet's impact could be enough in some cases, but death may occur after a period of time due to one of, or a combination of internal organ damage (say the heart was hit and stopped pumpin blood), loss of blood (either arterial or internal bleeding). Complications from infection could also result in death.

Hope that helps you!

Thought of one more: Severing the spinal cord (neck shot)
PS, I considered shot to the head but that's included in death by shock, my first sentence.

If you get hit by the bullet and can't stop the blood you can bleed out.
