During the accretion period the earth was bombarded by meteors. A large, near earth destroying celestial body, struck earth, causing a large amount of the earth to be ejected into space. The ejecta coalesced into the moon. large amounts of elements, such as iron, were carried to earth by these asteroids. A large meteor struck earth near Yucatan, Mexico which caused a mass die off and the extinction of the dinosaurs. Earth currently lives under the possibility of being struck by a monster meteor which can cause a nuclear winter and another mass extinction
