I read an article recently where he talks about coming back from a Genesis tour to find out his wife had left him. I gather that she couldn't handle his life style and divorced him.

He said it was really devastating and that after that, this song came out the first time he sat down by himself with an 8 track studio and a drum machine. I believe part of the vocals and drums on that demo ended up on the commercially released record.

The lyrics express the state of mind he was in after this loss. Being a very personal thing, it wasn't written to be totally revealing. I guess this is what leaves it open as to its clear meaning.

In The Air Tonight Meaning

There are many urban legends on what In the Air Tonight symbolises. The one that most people here is that the song is about a man that Phil Collins saw a man that was close enough to save a drowning person and didn't do anything. He wrote the song about the man who didn't help, and invited him to a concert to sit in front row. He then sang the saw directly to him. This is a myth.

Phil Collins was says he was going through a rough patch in his life and he was just putting his emotions into writing songs and this is one that came out.

Also, it is required you air drum when the drums make their entrance into the song :)

He's expecting that his girl will be breaking up with him in the very near future. He 'can feel it coming'. It's that feeling you get when you know something not-so-good is about to happen to you.

He supposedly saw someone drown and never even tried to rescue the person or something like that.
