I think it was colombus who suggested the name.If I am right,columbus who intended to go to India found an island and thought that that was India.Later he found out the truth and named it West Indies.........

The analogous "West Indies" originates from Christopher Columbus' idea that he had landed in the Indies (then meaning all of south and east Asia) when he had actually reached the Americas.
In the English-speaking Caribbean, someone from the Caribbean is usually referred to as a "West Indian", although the rather cumbersome phrase "Caribbean person" is sometimes used. The use of the words "Caribbean" and "Caribbeans" to refer to a West Indian or West Indians is largely unknown in the English-speaking Caribbean

It was actually because of Christopher Columbus, the first European to discover the islands of Cuba and Haiti, and several other smaller carribbean islands.
The purpose of his voyage was to try to find a western sea route to India. When he discovered the caribbean islands, he just assumed that they must be very close to India, because that was his original intended destination.
When he got back to Spain, the whole European world was filled with wonder with his stories of the new lands...and the opinion of Columbus was adopted as accepted fact: Everyone just assumed that Cuba lay off the coast of Asia. Not knowing about the American continent, they guessed that the Cuba must be in the Indian Sea, together with the other newly discovered islands.
So Europeans called the islands the West Indies, the name they have been known as ever since, although we know now they are not near Asia at all, but close to the coast of South America.
