I noticed a lot of interesting answers to this question but I will answer your question by first asking you a question, or more appropriately, it is a question you should first ask yourself.

What do you like to do?

It is a very simple question, with profound meaning. Who you are and what your likes and dislikes are will influence your ideal career selections far more than you may think.

Take me for example. I love the outdoors, enjoy a good challenge and am currently a computer programmer but have held many positions which include: Electronics Technician, Carpenter, Mechanic, Satellite Installer, etc... However, since I am not very people-oriented, I would not make a good doctor, salesman, or any kind of public role.

Being a woman shouldn't really affect your career choices because I have found that women can be just as capable as men, and I happen to be a man. Granted, you may face opposition that a man would not face because many employers are hesitant to hire a woman for certain positions because she could get pregnant, etc... but that is very difficult to proove. I know it is unfair but it is the way things are at many companies.

Pick what is right for you and if that doesn't work out, try something else that you like to do.

You really need to find out what your interested in and start moving that way. $40,000 is not a very ambitious goal so most any career you choose, if you learn and grow inside of that field, will net you at least that much. There is an old saying though that goes something like: If you make money doing something you enjoy, you will never work a day in your life.

I am a welder, and I make $19 an hour currently. It gets the men's respect, too knowing that i'm not a ditzy secretary and I know what they are talking about, and can haul a load and work in some nasty environments (in the bottom of a nuc. sub) The money is great, but coming home tired and grouchy makes me want something else-and it's very easy for me to find another job. People offer me new jobs all the time, because they know I'm a hard, dependable worker.

You need to set a clearer goal than just earning $40,000/yr. First you have to find out what you like to do, then work hard at making the money. If you only set out to make $40K in a job you may not like, you might have money, but you will be miserable.

Most anything in IT. WEb designer, Programmer, analyst, lots of options. Most starting positions pay almost 40k - reaching it with just a few years experience. Many will reach 60-80 after 5 - 10 years.

some type of job that you enjoy. do you like decorating and being creative? be a party planner! they make tons of money all year round. it is fun and im sure you would enjoy it. if you arent into that kinda stuff, how about doing another type of thing that you find fun. the amount you get paid doesnt have to do with the job, it is how good you are at it and if you can do it.

Something in finance or accounting. (Finance manager, Financial executive, Account executive, Accountant, Investment analyst, Financial analyst, etc.) You need a bachelor's degree in finance or accounting to qualify for these jobs. The salary ranges from 60k-120k...sometimes higher depending on how long you've been with company.

Good luck!!

Sure, but it does depend on where you live. I was in the Washington D.C. area and made $44,000 and that wasn't a lot of money. I'm now in South Carolina and that would be considered very good money.
