..gotta agree with you on that one; the film seems to get more and more twisted every time I see it, and that's because, with each viewing, I always manage to catch a new little quip of weirdness, which I didn't see before (i.e., just what WAS that watermelon in the machinery for???)
Initially, "Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension" did not grab the audience as much as 20th Century Fox had hoped; besides the word-of-mouth weirdness of the film, I think most people were over in the other theatre, watching "Amadeus", which was also out at around that time.
My biggest problem with the film is that there doesn't seem to be a real beginning or ending to the film; in fact, the first time I saw "Banzai", I felt as if I had walked into a film, already in progress.
I guess there IS more story out there, if someone is inclined to pick up the idea; you may recall, at the end of the film, there was an in-your-face announced sequel/follow-up, entitled "Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League".
On the special edition DVD of "BB", the commentary even hinted about the possibility of continuing the adventures of our intrepid, multi-talented, globe-trotting alien fighter, and his band of eclectic fellow warriors, on the T.V. circuit. However, even that never really materialized; in fact, if you scour the web, you will stumble upon several sites exclusively developed to petition interest in furthering the adventures of "Buckaroo Banzai" (I, myself, have signed on to a couple).

weirdest movie yes! But in some strange way, very watchable too. It jumps all around with its plot. The characters are really strange. But I enjoy this one. Peter Coyote has this strange soft voice. He would make a great villian in a horror movie. It would throw you off listening to him speak.
wanna do a really strange evening of double features? Do Buckaroo Bonzai and Tank Girl! I am warped but fun.

Very weird but still very good in a campy sort of way.
The best thing about that movie was the names, everyone named John then something else John smallberries ,
John BigBooty.
The most insulting thing was the storyline itself 80's Band leader and research scientist who solve crimes.
If you asked me if they should do The rumored part 2 I would
say in the 80's yes make it now No way.
You Go Peter Weller.
