Is it on the skin surface or below?
There are many possibilities, such as an ingrown hair or swollen lymph gland or something more serious. Only an examination by a physician will be able to get you an accurate diagnosis.

Don't panic. We all think cancer when we find a lump. There is probably a more logical explanation such as an ingrown hair, a pimple, a non cancerous cyst etc. Try putting some moist heat compresses on it tonight and see if it isn't getting smaller and better by tomorrow. You should have it checked out because lump in the axillary area could sometimes be problematic.

This is actually a Lymph Node. You have several of them through out your body and they usually com in pairs. ie: below tongue, back of throat, armpits and pelvic region.
They are a part of your central immune system and serve as a sort of command post for white blood cells. Often times they may become enflamed due to a partiularly strong bout with bacteria or when fighting an infection. Enflamation will cause to swell and become tender, and most are about the size of a kidney bean, normally.
This is really nothing to worry about unless you already have an abnormal immune system due to leukemia, hiv/aids, or advanced kidney disease, pre-existing.
This really is very common, and people usually will freak out and run to the doctor. Save yourself the co-pay: Drink lots of fluids, get lots of sleep and stay away from echinacea foi a while.

This has happened to me twice.
Is it close to the time for your menstrual period?
Sometimes, if a woman has too many caffeinated drinks or too much chocolate, it can aggravate 'fibroids' (little tumors in
the breast) and make both the breast and the armpit (which is actually breast tissue, too) very tender and sore.
I had Mammograms both times this happened to me, and both mammograms were negative.
I just have to be extra careful about over-consumption of diet sodas and coffee around a week before my period.
Good luck

Don't panic.Obviously, you will know for sure when you ask your doctor, but...I had that same experience, and -Don't panic. It was just a swollen spot on a gland. My doctor took one look at where I had my finger to show him, and instantly knew -no biggy. (He did the sensible, courteous thing and felt it too, but )-not to worry. Hopefully; not-to-worry in your case too. Sounds like it is the same thing, but you should ask, you know? Good luck, and don't panic. If it IS something, THEN you can panic. (I know; it's scary!) Oh. Mine was about 30-35 years ago........ =)
