cross multiply to show that the two ratios form a proportion (if they are equal).

5*12 = 60
6*10 = 60

5/6 * 2/2 = 10/12

You can multiply 5/6 by 2/2 without changing the other side because 2/2 is equal to 1, therefore you do not change the problem. You could also do this in reverse with division....

5/6 = 10/12 divided by 2/2

5:6::10:12
5X12=60
6X10=60

Do the two inside figures and then two outside figures by crossmultiplying if they are equal then your proportion is correct.

5/6=10/12 first you cross multiply 5x12 and that =60 then cross multiply 6x10 and that = 60 your answer is 60=60

so let's use *s as the side of one rectangle and @s for a different rectangle.

so we'll have a rectangle ABCD and a rectangle EFGH. they are similar (meaning proportional sides), okay?

side AB is proportional to side EF:
AB=5 and EF=10
***** and @@@@@@@@@@

side BC is proportional to side FG:
BC=6 and FG=12
****** and @@@@@@@@@@@@

make sure to draw the rectangles (use the *s and @s as sides) and label which side is which!

Why don't you show us what you think is the correct way and then we'll tell you if it's right.
