so the telescope I was going to purchase is beyond my current price range so I'm looking at a couple of other starter scopes and want your input. one is a schmidt cassegrain and the other is a maksutov cassegrain. the first is Celestron C6-A Schmidt Cassegrain OTA - XLT and the second is Konus Motormax 130 OTA. the konus is 1" smaller and has an F ratio of 15 vs the celestron's 10 it just I've heard that maksutovs offer better optical quality usually but then again an extra inch of objective and a slightly faster scope...........

Go for the Celestron. I own a Celestron NexStar 6SE and its optics and mechanics are excellent. Though made in China by Synta, it undergoes Celestron's quality control, and the result is excellent. Konus switched suppliers in China a while back from Synta (good) to some no-name supplier, whose scopes are junk. The f/10 focal ratio on the Celestron makes for a more versatile scope while the f/15 Konus has a narrow field of view. And an extra inch of aperture is always a bonus.

I would favor the extra inch of aperture and the faster focal ratio of the SCT. Any potential difference in optical quality between an SCT and Maksutov will be difficult for an inexperienced eye to notice. The SCT will gather around 37% more light, and allow a little more detail to be brought out of objects. That would be my pick.

I would go for the extra aperture. If both telescopes are well made, I don't think either design will make any important difference, which leaves aperture as the deciding factor.
