Yes Bush did say benchmarks a year ago.Unfortunately he didn't follow through and make them achieve the benchmarks. He's given billions of U S dollars to the Iraqi government which has "disappeared".Congress wants to enforce the benchmarks and also make the Iraqi government accountable for the money they are given.Do you like the fact that your tax dollars are open ended for the Iraqi to do with as they choose or do you think they should account for it?I think that is the real question you should consider.

Bush hasn't tried anything but stay the course! He could have done anything he wanted a year ago. Republicans all had blank checks and went unchecked and ran-amuck!

Roadrunn, all Democrats are not all liberal. I guess you would say that David Gates and Ben and Jerry are devoid of ideas. Now you know why I hate idealogs! They think there is only black and white, and them and us! Sick people!

No, Bush refused any form of measurements for success and declared that his military plan was to "Stay the Course", which, as was properly pointed out then, is just a cheap motto and not any sort of a plan at all.

To try is to fail. Without timelines and consequences, benchmarks are just a good way to pretend you actually want to leave Iraq someday.
