What are the good things about censorship in mass media? I've written 5 pages why it is "bad", now I gotta write about 3 pages as to why it is a "good" thing.

Any body have some suggestions?

Thanks

There is nothing good about censorship. You start censoring what people say, you end up silencing what could be a great thought, idea, etc. Censorship thrives on protecting people's feelings as opposed to challenging their minds and their beliefs.

I firmly believe there needs to be personal accountability for what we say and do. But silencing someone because another person might be offended? Forget it.

You could say censorship is:
Censorship is to Selective Speech as Clumsy is to uniquely coordinated.

"If censorship reigns there cannot be sincere flattery, and only small men are afraid of small writings."
-- Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais, French comedy writer

"Every burned book enlightens the world."
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Limiting the freedom of news 'just a little bit' is in the same category with the classic example 'a little bit pregnant'."
-- Robert Anson Heinlein, "A Rabble in Arms"

Censorship protects young adults from material that is not suited for them because of emotional or psychological damage that could happen to them, for example letting a five year old watching The Exorcism. Not good.
Censorship can protect adults from material that invite them to do senseless acts because they are already disturbed, for example child molesters.
Censorship can keep the shady and disgusting business entrepreneurs from taking advantage of the uneducated.
I am not for extreme censorship, but at the same time I believe if human beings do not have a leash at all, they would do anything to a fellow human being without the slightest consideration to their welfare. We should have some dignity.

The worst thing about censorship is: ...that someone has already censored your question. Just look at it. I think it's wrong. The censors will take the liberty to simply replace whatever you'd written with a line. Just wrong.

In wartime it's necessary.

Keeps pornography and violence from children.

That's about the only good things I can see in it. I agree with the 1st poster; there's nothing really good about censorship. This should be used only in the two cases above.
