I have been working for a small company for almost 3 months. During this time, I have heard terrible things about the owner of the company and his business practices. Employees are leaving in droves due to these rumors.

At present, I am a temporary employee but an informal offer of permanent employment with the company has been made to me. I would like to stay because I have been temping for the last 2 years and I want to find a job I can stay with for at least 5 to 10 years.

The rumors worry me because they are serious in nature and I've seen for myself that they could have basis in fact. I am sole breadwinner in my household with a child to support so I would have to have a new job secured before I could walk away.

Should I take the risk and try to find another job?

It sounds like some seriously fishy business is brewing in the background, but also like you may have some time before a quick exit either happens or is necessary. Given your situation, I think it would make sense for you to accept the offer and begin working, BUT keep your options very open.

Be wary of getting involved in any of the funny business, and if that turns out to be necessary, it will be the signal for the quick exit. It's important for you to support your household, and as long as you are doing honest work in your position, how fishy the management is should have no effect on your resume, should something happen with the company. If at any point you begin to feel that the degree of shadiness is approaching a critical level, begin looking for a new job (but don't necessarily walk out until you find one).

There really is no such thing as "permanent" employment, and try not to think of it in that way. Permanence is just another degree of passing through, and there is nothing wrong with accepting such an offer with the full knowledge that it will only last a finite amount of time. You need the cash right now.

I would be on the phone to the Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complaints made against the company. Rumors and just that. Perhaps you might also want to contact those employees who left and see if they will share why they left, perhaps for reasons you don't care about.

Think about those rumors. What are they? Is the company folding? Is the company moving? Is the CEO or/and CFO being investigated? Many times unhappy employees who have been terminated will start rumors just to hurt the employer.

In the meantime looking for another job has two risks. One that the company you are currently employed with will terminate that employment. Second is that you will find a better job and want to move.

Think of it this way. You have a kid, would it be better if that kid had a mother without a job, or mother that's always stressed or perhaps injured. Of course, I don't know what these rumors are, but if I were you, I would leave the job. If you were determined enough to not give up after two years, then I'm sure you have enough determination to get another job and get away from you troubling employer.

If the rumors are true, and the story becomes public knowlage you will be tainted by it. So quietly start to investigate you options. Don't quit, take the offer if you find yourself between a rock and a hard place. Follow your sense of ethics and find a comapny that relects your own sense of values.

If they are serious and they could have basis in fact, then YES, but don't leave your current job until you've found another.

You're likely going to have to look for a new job anyway. Better to do it on your own terms, rather than because your boss is in jail.
