It is never explained how he wound up in the future. The reason he is upset is because he realizes that he is not on another planet but on earth. And seeing the statue in that state means (to him) that there was nuclear conflict and the world's peoples destroyed themselves and led the way for apes to become the primary species. You have to remember that the book was written during the cold war when the world was almost waiting for a nuclear catastrophe.

If you don't see the other movies it doesn't make as much sense. Later in the series, several apes go back in time to discover that Taylor told them the truth. Apes didn't speak and humans were the dominant species. When Taylor sees the statue he realizes he's always been on his planet and that people had destroyed their world as he knew it. See the entire series and some things make more sense, although you do have to make some assumptions on your own.

It means by seeing the remnants of the Statue of Liberty that Taylor realized that he had returned to Earth in the future, and did not land on some foreign planet.
It seemed man had destroyed himself and reduced himself to a bunch of mumbling savages while the apes took over.

The humans were NOT dumb, as you think. The apes took out there vocal chords as punishment if they talked. The humans are insecure because of years of slavery to the apes. Just like the slaves back in our own horrible US history, they had been beaten down to believe they were the lessor sub-standard species. They just didn't have any hope.

The humans were still smart they were afraid of the apes. In a few scenes like where Nova ruined Taylor's message in the cage. She had to know they were letters.

If you're talking about the original version with Charlton Heston realized he was NOT on an alien world (which is what he thought), but actually on Earth, and that's why he was so upset.
